Historical Map.   Approximate date is 1882.  This map (662k) is the area just north of the Caucasus, and the southernmost part of Russia.  It includes the cities of Astrakhan and Volgagrad (formerly Stalingrad and, before that, Tzaritzyn).  I've tried to identify where I believe Elista would be by including a blue square.

Historical Map.   Approximate date is 1820.  This map (948k) is the entire Russian Empire.  I found this interesting because, if you scroll around on your browser and find the area just north of the Caspian Sea, you'll see a region noted as "Kalmucs" on the map.
